Office Wardrobe Horror Stories

Does your office have a "Casual Friday"? Or perhaps your management has relaxed the dress code even more during this long, hot summer in an effort to make everyone more comfortable. Comfortable is one thing, but have you noticed that some of your co-workers looking more like they're ready for happy hour or a day at the beach?

Relaxed wardrobes are always more noticeable on women than men. When a woman shows up for work in a strappy summer dress, her credibility immediately takes a nosedive. Rather than looking at her for her contributions to the team, many will see a much different vision. A scantily dressed woman is not taken seriously.

If a woman is in a sales job and shows too much skin, even if her clothing is stylish and high quality, her looks can kill - mainly her chances for advancement. Wearing short skirts and heels that are several inches too high is more appropriate for a cocktail party than the office. Looking as if she is on her way to a party tends to make everyone uncomfortable.

Or how about the employees who has decided to dress down by wearing flip flops, wrinkled slacks and a T-shirt? The physical display leads managers to see that they are no longer interested in the job and may be the time for them to move on.

One office manager says Casual Friday in her office has turned into a picnic atmosphere with several female employees dressing like Daisy Duke with extra short cutoffs. After numerous complaints (probably not from men in the office) the HR department had to send out a memo on what is appropriate office attire even for casual days.

Men don't escape attire scrutiny either, nor should they. Worn jeans and wife-beater shirts are clearly not appropriate office attire.

So if you bra straps are showing, your flip flops are flopping and there is too much skin on display, maybe it's time to review your office policy and change the way you look-and the way others look at you.
