Get out your green overalls, Idaho says the state has one of the highest numbers of environmentally focused jobs in the country. Of course, that information comes from the Idaho Department of Labor who may be a little biased in their assessment of the situation. In any case, Idaho ranks slightly behind six other states with the number of green jobs.
In Idaho, there just over 17,000 green jobs in the state. This represents about 2 percent of the total workforce of around 850,000. Idaho apparently has a burgeoning green economy, so the number of associated jobs comes as no real surprise. The problem, however, is green jobs in Idaho are concentrated in industries facing minimal growth in the next few years such as forestry, lumber production and construction. There are over 1,000 construction workers in Idaho, which is the largest single profession under the green jobs umbrella. Ten percent of all Idaho employers have at least one worker involved in a green job. Depending on the climate of the economy, business and consumer activity, Idaho definitely has room to grow more green jobs. Green jobs can be found in 152 occupations with half of them concentrated in the top 20 occupations in the state. You might be wondering what constitutes a green job? If a position contributes directly to renewable energy and alternative fuels, is energy efficient, conserves resources, is involved in sustainable agriculture or is in waste control, it is considered green. Of all green jobs in Idaho, over 30 percent are in sustainable agriculture and natural resource conservation. Renewable energy accounted for 17 percent of green jobs in the state. Sixty percent of all green jobs in Idaho are found in only three industries - scientific and technical services, construction and government. Oh, and by the way, green jobs pay very well. At almost $3 per hour more than the average of all Idaho jobs, the green variety averages over $17 per hour. Idaho is green and excited about its prospects.
