In a sign of just how difficult the economy is these days, R&B singer R. Kelly (Robert Kelly) is facing foreclosure on a $3.5 million dollar mortgage loan. The legal action claims the artist has not made a payment on his 11,140 square foot mansion since June 2010. Consequently, J. P. Morgan Chase Bank filed a $2.9 million foreclosure on the property.
Reports say Kelly stopped making mortgage payments over a year ago intentionally, in an effort to force Chase to renegotiate the terms of his original loan. Obviously, that plan, if it is true, did not work out very well for Kelly. Chase is now after the $2.9 million dollar balance on his mortgage loan that does not include interest or other charges. Built in 1999, Kelly's mansion in Olympia Fields, Illinois is big. So big, it houses 13 bathrooms (6 full and 7 half-baths). In 2009, the home was valued at $5.2 million but the decline of high-end properties in Illinois has left the home with a valuation of only $3.8 million. Even considering his failure to make payments, Kelly clearly is not broke. He has, however, spent a lot of money on lawyers for the past 15 years. His legal problems started in 1996 when he got into a fight in a health club and was later booked on battery charges. Adding more fuel to the legal fire, two women sued him for sexual misconduct. In 2002, he was indicted on 21 counts of child pornography in Illinois and later an additional 12 counts in Florida. He was ultimately found not guilty in Illinois and the Florida charges were dropped. His business world has not fared much better. Another R&B artist, Jay-Z, sued Kelly in 2004 after a joint tour was cancelled. Since then, they have sued each other multiple times. Most recently, Kelly's managers sued him for $1 million for failure to pay them. It's easy to see why he might need the extra cash these days.
