Like most of us, a good portion of your life, personal and professional, is on your computer's hard drive. From pictures and music to confidential documents and financial data, one of the worst things you face is losing your hard drive. Loss of a hard drive may spell disaster, but there may be a way to recover your data even if your drive is fried
So before you toss that old drive, make sure the problem is with the drive. If you have installed new hardware, unplug it and try rebooting. In Windows, you can try booting in Safe Mode. Reboot your computer and hit the F8 key as soon as the computer starts up. If you get a screen asking what mode you want, chose the Safe Mode option. If you manage to get to the Windows login screen, the problem is not with your drive. You are having some type of software conflict or other issue. After thorough examination and a bit of trial and error, if you don't find any specific problems, try re-installing Windows. Or try the System Restore that will restore your computer to a previous date when you weren't experiencing problems. There are some very technical ways to check your drive but they would take far too long to explain here. And some of them, if used incorrectly, can severely damage your drive, making your problem even worse. Lets assume a worst-case scenario: you cannot boot into safe mode. What now? Try unplugging everything, including power, and open the case to your computer (desktop computers only). If you need help, ask a computer savvy friend for assistance. Once you locate the drive, carefully unplug it from the ribbon cable and power source. There is a possibility the cables are loose and once re-connected your drive will work. The last resort is to take your computer to an authorized repairperson. It can be expensive, but chances are, they can tell if your hard drive is salvageable and, if not, in most cases can recover your data.
